What Can and Cannot Be Shipped from India Internationally This Diwali?

Clothing, home textiles and some festive accessories are practical starting points for Diwali shopping from India. Food, cosmetics, liquids, idols and battery products need individual checks. Shoppre does not accept precious metals or stones, and fireworks should not be included in an ordinary shopping parcel.
The key is to check the exact product before purchasing. An item sold online in India is not automatically eligible for international forwarding.
This guide explains what to review, which products need extra attention and what information to send Shoppre before placing your order.
Three separate checks determine whether an item can travel
An international parcel must meet three sets of requirements:
Export requirements: The product must qualify for export from India.
Shipping acceptance: Shoppre and the selected courier must accept it.
Destination requirements: The receiving country must permit its import under the applicable conditions.
Approval at one stage does not replace the other checks. Courier acceptance also does not guarantee customs clearance.
DHL distinguishes prohibited products from restricted products that require prior approval. Restrictions depend on the service and shipment, not just the product’s general category. DHL shipping guidance

This is a screening guide, not approval for every product within a category.
1. Clothing and home textiles
Sarees, kurtas, children’s outfits, dupattas, cushion covers and table runners are useful products to consider for a festive order.
Keep accurate product descriptions and invoices. Check unusual materials or decorative components rather than assuming every garment is treated identically.
For clothing, also confirm measurements, stitching requirements and return terms. Shipping eligibility will not help if the outfit arrives in the wrong size.
Fabric torans and wall hangings offer another way to decorate without ordering heavy pieces. Explore our Diwali décor guide for ideas.
2. Imitation jewellery versus precious jewellery
Do not rely on the appearance of a necklace or pair of earrings to identify its materials.
Terms such as “gold finish,” “silver look” and “pearl detail” need clarification. Ask the seller what the base metal, stones and beads actually contain.
Shoppre’s current FAQ states that gold, silver, pearls, diamonds and other precious stones or metals are not accepted. Do not order these products for Shoppre forwarding. Shoppre shipping FAQ
For imitation jewellery, share the listing and composition before purchasing. Calling an item “fashion jewellery” does not settle its eligibility.
3. Indian sweets, snacks and dry fruits
Sealed packaging is useful, but it does not make every food eligible for international delivery.
Before ordering, check:
The complete ingredient list.
Whether refrigeration is required.
The production or packing date where available.
The remaining shelf life.
The destination’s food import conditions.
Shoppre and courier acceptance.
Kaju katli, soan papdi, namkeen and dry fruit sweets should be assessed individually. “Dry sweet” does not necessarily mean dairy free or suitable for prolonged transit.
Fresh sweets requiring refrigeration are unsuitable for an ordinary parcel service unless an appropriate temperature controlled arrangement has been explicitly confirmed.
Explore our Indian sweets and dry fruits delivery guide for shopping ideas, then confirm the exact product before paying.
Does homemade food qualify?
Do not assume homemade or unlabelled food will be accepted. Ask what ingredient information, packaging and documentation are required.
Likewise, a branded retail packet does not override restrictions on its ingredients.
4. Diyas, idols and pooja accessories
An empty diya and a diya supplied with fuel are different shipping items. A pooja thali and a complete pooja kit also require different checks.
For lamps, bells, thalis and idols, share the material, dimensions, weight and value. Identify whether an item is newly manufactured or an older object.
Ask separately about every accompanying product, particularly oils, camphor, incense, powders, food, seeds or plant material.
Brass and metal products are not automatically unrestricted. Fragile clay pieces also need suitable protection, and extra packing affects the final parcel size and cost.
Before buying an idol, read our guide to shipping a Ganesha idol overseas.
5. Cosmetics, skincare and hair oils
A sealed cream, a bottle of hair oil and an aerosol deodorant cannot be assessed as one general “beauty” category.
Provide the exact product name, quantity, ingredients and packaging details. Where required, ask the seller for safety information.
Small quantity alone does not establish acceptance. Ingredients, flammability, pressure and destination requirements all matter.
The same applies to herbal and Ayurvedic products. A traditional ingredient or natural label does not establish that a product qualifies for import.
What about cosmetics sent to Malaysia?
Do not treat Malaysia as having a blanket ban on every cosmetic import. Its National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency describes a cosmetic notification system and applicable controls. Malaysia NPRA cosmetic guidance
That does not mean Shoppre can carry every cosmetic to Malaysia. Ask support about the exact product and route, and confirm the applicable import requirements before ordering.
6. Groceries, spices and cooking ingredients
Masalas, flour, pulses, mixes, pickles and ghee are different products with different ingredients and handling needs.
A sealed pickle jar is not a dry grocery item. It can contain liquid or oil and needs both food eligibility and packaging checks.
For plant products, the degree of processing matters. Whole seeds and processed ingredients should not be treated as interchangeable.
Avoid broad claims that one country is “easy” for food while another is “strict.” Review the actual product against the destination’s current rules.
For Australia, consult the government’s bringing or mailing goods guidance. Use the relevant destination authority for other countries and confirm that the guidance applies to posted goods, not only passenger baggage.
7. Electrical decorations and battery products
There are two separate questions:
Can the item be shipped?
Will it work safely at the destination?
Check the product’s actual voltage, frequency, plug and safety information. Some power supplies support multiple voltages. Others do not. A plug adapter alone does not convert voltage.
Battery powered lights are not automatically the simpler shipping option. State the battery type and whether batteries are installed, packed separately or excluded.
DHL’s guidance describes lithium battery shipments as restricted and subject to specific acceptance conditions. Those conditions do not establish approval for an ordinary Shoppre parcel. DHL battery shipping information
Check power banks, rechargeable toys and electronic gifts before ordering.
Products to keep out of an ordinary Diwali parcel
Do not add fireworks or sparklers to a shopping shipment.
Perfumes, aerosol sprays, flammable products, standalone batteries and alcohol require specific acceptance checks and should not be packed without explicit approval.
Fresh flowers, plants and seeds need separate review. For a simple decorative order, consider artificial alternatives, but still check the materials.
Review Shoppre’s prohibited items guidance before making a purchase. Do not conceal a restricted product inside a gift hamper or describe it vaguely.
A checklist to send Shoppre before you order
Include the following information in your enquiry:
Destination country and postcode.
Product link and exact name.
Quantity and purchase value.
Materials or ingredients.
Package size and weight, if available.
Details of liquids, powders, batteries or plant material.
Storage requirements for food.
Your required arrival date.
Ask whether the item is accepted, what documents are needed and whether special packing or charges apply.
Hypothetical example
Suppose a gift hamper contains a kurta, imitation earrings, sweets, an empty diya and a bottle of perfume.
The kurta’s eligibility does not approve the whole hamper. The earrings need a material check, the sweets need food checks, the diya needs review and protection, and the perfume needs separate transport approval.
Ask about each item before buying the hamper. Removing one unsuitable component can be easier than dealing with an entire parcel after it arrives at the warehouse.
What happens if an item is restricted?
The outcome depends on where the issue is found and which rule applies.
A parcel can be held for information, refused by the carrier, returned or stopped by the destination authorities. Some situations involve seizure or disposal. Additional charges depend on the circumstances.
Do not assume that customs rejection always produces the same result or that the product and shipping charges will be refunded.
Checking before purchase gives you more options while the item is still with the seller.
How Shoppre helps with the purchase
If you can order independently, ask about forwarding the eligible purchase through your assigned Indian address.
If checkout prevents the purchase, contact the Shoppre Personal Shopper team with the product details.
Purchasing assistance does not override shipping restrictions. Confirm eligibility first, particularly for food, cosmetics, jewellery, idols and electrical products.
Frequently asked questions
Can sealed Indian sweets be shipped internationally?
Only after checking the exact product. Ingredients, storage needs, shelf life, courier acceptance and destination rules all affect eligibility.
Can I ship brass diyas without restrictions?
Do not assume that. Confirm the material, contents, dimensions and destination. Ask about protective packing and ensure no fuel or other restricted product is included.
Can I send gold or silver jewellery through Shoppre?
No. Shoppre’s current FAQ lists gold, silver and other precious materials among items it does not accept.
Does marking a parcel as a gift remove restrictions?
No. Gifts still need accurate descriptions and values and must meet the relevant shipping and import requirements.
Are passenger baggage rules the same as parcel rules?
Do not use a baggage allowance as proof that an item can travel by courier. Check the requirements for the actual shipping method.
Check the product before you fill the cart
Start with the exact item, not an assumption about the category.
Browse the Shoppre Personal Shopper store, shortlist your Diwali purchases and send support the product details and destination before ordering anything that needs approval.
A clear answer before purchase is more useful than discovering a restriction after the parcel has begun its journey.
